Austin Artist Revitalizes Covert Park Monument
Following a brief hike, visitors to Mount Bonnell at Covert Park in Austin, Texas, experience what may be the city’s most beautiful view of Lake Austin and a glimpse of downtown. The limestone monument at the park’s entrance began to show signs of wear, with some letters of the monument’s inscription illegible. In 2010, the West Point Society of Central Texas adopted Covert Park as part of the Adopt-a-Park program and initiated a plan to replace the monument.
The new monument of granite was designed by architect Jason Andrus, formerly of Austin’s O’Connell Robertson, in collaboration with artist and monument designer Gilbert Beall of Beall Memorial Art in Austin. Local Sunset Red granite was supplied and fabricated by Coldspring. With granite, the new monument will now stand the test of time, and the inscriptions telling the story of the park’s history have a striking, ideal background.
